This Week in ELA - April 23rd - 27th

  • Monday - ReadyGen Lesson 2A. 16
    • We will continue to read Cesar Chavez pages 86-98.  Our I can statements for the day will be:
      • I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. RI.5.1
      • I can present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.  Correct sentence fragments.
      • I can expand, combine, and reduce sentences for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style.

  • Tuesday - ReadyGen Lesson 2A.17
    • Today is a wrap up day for Unit 2.  We will end the unit by comparing the text we have used during this unit to look at how visuals and text features add to understanding.  Our I can statements will be:
      • I can compare and contrast stories in the same genre on their approaches to similar themes and topics. RL.5.9
      • I can recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize  or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources. 
      • I can expand, combine, and reduce sentences for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style. 
  • Wednesday: Assessment Day
    • Students will show what they have learned by completing the end of unit 2A unit test and turning in completed Unit 2A PBA "Speeches for Justice".  Students will also take their next AR Test to check if reading comprehension levels are continuing to increase with exposure. 

  • Thursday - ReadyGen Lesson 2B.1
    • We will start the day by looking at the expectations for Unit 2B.  Then we will move into ReadyGen Lesson 2B.1.  We will start a new book called "Escape to Freedom".  Our I can statements for today will be:
      • I can determine the main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text. RI.5.2
      • I can determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. RI.5.4
      • I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
  • Friday - Skill Review Friday
    • We will be practicing the skills we worked on this week by reading our weekly reader - Time For Kids.  The article we will focus on is  Kids of Kakuma about kids in a Kenyan refugee camp and their struggle to go to school.  This ties in not just with our skill review but our unit on overcoming obstacles and social injustices.  Students will work on analyzing text features, close reading, and comprehension.
Homework:
  1. Reading Response Journals should be completed five nights out of the seven nights of a week.  They are do on assigned days.  Monday (1-5) Tuesday (6-10) Wednesday (11-15) Thursday (16-20) and Friday (21-25).  This is part of their homework grade.
  2. Homework Packet #27 was passed out on Monday and is due on Friday.  Students will practice close reading, analyzing text, answering multi-level questions, and responding to a written prompt.
