Happy Holidays!

Coming soon...

As soon as we get back, our math class will be learning about decimal division. We will also be learning how to estimate decimal quotients. You can expect to see homework that involves division of decimals through hundredths.

Use trips to grocery or department stores as opportunities to practice decimal division. For example, “Which is the better buy, the 10-ounce box of cereal for $3.25 or the 15-ounce box for $4.65?” Work together to write a division sentence to represent each situation. Help your child estimate the quotient and then find the exact answer.

During the Break:

-- Complete math packet
--Practice multiplication and division facts
-- and spend time with loved ones :-)

Wishing everyone a Blessed Holiday Season and Happy New Year filled with love, health and laughter!

Miss you,

D.Cruz

Thursday - Holidays are ALMOST here!

We had a lot of "catching up" to do today, but we got it done.  We talked a lot about the first three chapters of the text we are reading.  This is some very complex issues for students to get, so I wanted to make sure they got it.

Chapter 1 was mainly about "Why aren't there more black people in the history of the United States?"  They were there, so why are they not included?

Chapter 2 was mainly about Pap, a young boy who was captured in Africa and how his life unfolds as a slave in America.

Chapter 3 was about Abolition (ending slavery).  We talked about why and WHO some of the major players were and how when Lincoln was elected, the south was worried about their way of life and economic system so they left the Union and formed the Confederate States of America.

Chapter 4 was about what happened next.  It talked about the duality of the south.  How it seems so beautiful and fertile, but then had this dark side of slavery.  It went on to discuss exactly what happened leading up to the civil war and why Lincoln freed the slaves.

Students worked in groups to fill out a graphic organizer of positive aspects of living in the south and negative aspects of living in the south.

Homework:

  • Read 45 minutes daily, fill out log, get parents to sign
  • Literacy Vacation Packet
  • Math Vacation Packet
