Wednesday 1/16/19

  • 1st / 2nd - Math
    • Ms. Baez, the math coach, worked with the students today on GoMath Lesson 6.6 - Comparing Fractions Using Benchmarks.  After the mini-lesson, students broke up into groups and worked on tasks using benchmarks.
  • 3rd/4th  - Reading
    • The focus of session 7 was Defending Your Thoughts about a text by noticing changes in the story or character and using those changes to defend your thoughts.  We read another chapter of The Tiger Rising and then looked for ways to defend the thought "Mrs. Bailey was rude!"  Students used highlighters to find the just right sections of the chapter and then wrote a response to defend that statement.  I can't wait to read what they did!
  • 4th - PE with Mr. Hoffman (Mr. Hoffman wasn't here today, so I kept the kids!)
  • 5th - Writing
    • Our focus today for session 7 was using lists as evidence.  We talked about making a claim or statement, then making a list to support that claim.  We ended our writing lesson by trying some new technology called plinkers where I put a question on the board and then students hold up special cards that reads their answers through my cell phone.  SO COOL!

  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - Math Review / Class Novel "The BirchBark House"
    • We decided to go over the homework from last night, the mid-point review to make sure everyone was on the same page.  We went through the problems and focused on making sure to do the correct math at the right time (simplifying you use factors (GCF), common denominators you use multiples (LCM) - and no matter what, whatever you do to the numerator, you have to do to the denominator!)  Then we went over the homework quiz about identifying equivalent fractions (most people got between 10-12 right out of 12!)  Finally, we did a short quiz for students to make an equivalent fraction using models since Ms. Baez said they needed more work with modeling.
    • We then ended the day by reading from our novel The Birchbark House.
Homework:

  • GoMath 6.6 practice
  • Creating Common Denominators – 2
  • ELA – Packet page 3
  • Reading – Read for 40 minutes, reading log, fill out character trait page on your book
