Happy Valentine's Day!

Ready, set , SNOW!

These last few days have been very busy with snow days and math exams. I congratulate all of our students for their dedications and persistence during these exams! Great JOB!

Coming up next in MATH Room 404

Chapter Essential Questions:

Chapter 6: How do we add fractions with unlike denominators?
Chapter 7 : How do you multiply fractions?

Before Grade 5, students learned to recognize equivalent fractions and to generate equivalent fractions by using common denominators or numerators. Students also learned to build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers. Then students learned to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators.

Finally, students learned to add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction. In Grade 5, students extend their understanding of fraction operations by using equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

In Chapter 6, students learn to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators using models and/or equations to represent the problem. They use benchmark fractions to estimate sums and differences, and they find equivalent fractions with common denominators.

They also use patterns to write a rule to describe a sequence of fractions. Understanding patterns enables students to discover numerical relationships and sets the foundations for work with functions in later grades.
