Friday, March 29th

  • 1st / 2nd / 3rd- Math Block
    • We started the day with breakfast in the classroom and we watched another episode of LIBERTY KIDS.   These videos go with not just our American History unit in reading and writing, but what we are studying in SS too!
    • Afterwards, we had a review and retest kinda day.  After collecting homework we did the FRIZ #17.  Then we went over yesterdays Chapter 11 Unit Test to look and see what we understood and what we didn't.  After reviewing the questions and checking for understanding - students took the Chapter 11 FORM B test with only 12 questions.  Almost all students showed improvement.
    • Students worked on reviewing adding angles, estimating angles, and measuring angles for their skill review period.
  • 3rd / 4th  - Room Prep - Portfolio Time
    • We took some time to pass out a ton of papers that needed to go in portfolios and then file them.  We also started covering up all the walls to get ready for ELA STATE TEST next Tuesday and Wednesday!
    • Students who were finished could read from their independent books, their American History Mini-Books, or work on the math triangle puzzle I passed out.
  • 5th - Social Studies
    • Chapter 5 - Lesson 2
      • We finished reading Chapter 5 as a class.  Then students worked independently to answer a short comprehension section on what they had just read.
  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - PE with Mr. Hoffman
Homework:
  • Math 2 Sided Paper - Missing Angles and Additive Angles
  • SS - Chapter 5 Take  Home Math Test
  • Reading - Causes of the American Revolution

Thursday, April 28th

  • 1st / 2nd - Math Block
    • Today we went over the End of Chapter Review from last night's homework.  It had a lot of the same questions that were on today's Chapter 11 Test.  I can tell who was paying close attention to the review, because they missed questions we covered in the review on the test.  This is a problem.  Attention to detail and precision is something you have to work toward.  I hope that they saw the direct effects of not paying close attention to reviews and homework.
    • Students took the Chapter 11 Form A Math Test today.  After taking the test, they input their answers into ThinkCentral.  You can have them log in from home and show you their test and their answers.  Scores are on TeacherEase.
  • 3rd - Art
  • 4th/5th - ELA Block
    • Students spent 25-30 minutes being researchers with the articles and mini-books they have been given to use for our American History Research Unit. Then we came in and did a test prep review of the difference between TEST STRUCTURE and TEST FEATURES.
    • Next we read another section of our class novel "JOHNNY TREMAIN".
    • We ended our block by reading an article about what led up to the French Indian War and students practiced reading, paraphrasing, and taking boxes and bullet notes which they will need for their research project and writing unit.
  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - Social Studies
    • chapter 5, lesson 2
    • Liberty Kids - Battle of Bunker Hill
Homework:
  • ELA Packet Due Tomorrow - Finish and Check all Sections
  • Math
    • Exemplar Task - Finding the Angles
    • Exemplar Task - Acute Angles

ELA STATE TESTNEXT WEEKTUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Wednesday, March 27

  • 1st / 2nd - Math Block
    • We started by going over the homework from the night before.  We paid special attention to just distinguishing the angle.. then making sure our answer fit the angle.
    • Next we did the last lesson from Chapter 11 - Lesson 11.5 which was using what we learned to answer word problems and problems with other shapes.
    • Finally, we took a step back and went back to measuring and drawing angles and making sure that we have that tricky skill mastered.  More work to be done here for sure!  You must make sure that your measure matches the type of angle you are measuring... THINK!
  • 3rd - ELA Block
    • We started reading chapter 2 of Johnny Tremain before heading off to PE.
  • 4th - PE with Mr. Hoffman
  • 5th - ELA BLOCK
    • We finished section two and then did our mini-lesson on text structure for nonfiction texts.  Then we did session 1 in our Reading American History Unit.  We passed out three articles on the causes of the Revolution and talked about how we will be researchers for the next month. After looking at the articles, we branched off into independent reading so that students could start reading their articles and mini-books to start gaining background knowledge of the causes of the revolution before we start doing our research report.
  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - Social Studies
    • Chapter 5 - Lesson 1
    • Causes of the Revolution up to the Second Continental Congress!
    • Liberty Kids - The Second Continental Congress
Homework:
Math- GoMath Chapter 11 End of Chapter Review
ELA - ELA Packet Day 3

Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Tuesday, March 26

  • 1st - Music with Ms. Young
  • 2nd / 3rd - ELA Block
    • Students finished their New Unit Pre-test.  Then we had a morning meeting to go over the background of the revolution.  We talked about key reasons and key players in the American Revolution.  We then read the first chapter of our new class novel "Johnny Tremain".
  • 4th/5th - Math Block
    • We did a review of measuring and drawing angles.  We took a lot of time looking at angles to make sure they could recognize if the angle was obtuse, it couldn't be 60 degrees... of if it was acute, it couldn't be 120 degrees.  They need to be able to look at an angle and say, yes, that sounds like the right measurement.
    • Today we did lesson 11.4 which was the additive property of angles.  Basically if you have two small angles connected, you can add them to get the size of the big angle they create.  If you have a big angle and one of the small angles, you can subtract to find the measure of the missing angle.
  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - Social Studies
    • With 1/2 the class gone at musical practice, the rest of the class watched The Green Mountain Boys episode of Liberty Kids.
Homework:
  • Math GoMath 11.4 practice (problems that don't need a protractor)
  • Finding Angle Measures by adding or subtracting
  • Reading packet Day 2

Monday, March 25, 2019

Monday, March 25

  • 1st - Dance with Mr. Nunez
  • 2nd / 3rd - Math Block
    • Today was a REVIEW day for Angles.  We reviewed how to measure using a protractor and how to draw angles using a protractor.  After looking at the work done today, a good half the students need more work on this so we will retouch it tomorrow before moving on.
    • We also did the Mid-Chapter check to make sure we have lessons 1-3 mastered before doing lesson 11.4 and 11.5 to end the unit.
  • 4th - Writing
    • In getting ready for our new unit in Writing About History, we created little AMERICAN HISTORY MINI BOOKS.
    • The books are on:
      • The American Revolution
      • The Boston Tea Party
      • The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere
      • George Washington
    • These mini-books will be our first "texts" to practice taking notes and gathering information for a research report on American History during the Revolution.
  • 5th- Reading
    • New Unit - time to pre-test the students knowledge.
    • We read the two text together and then went over the four questions students had to answer.  Most students didn't complete the pre-assessment, so we will finish them tomorrow.
  • 6th - Lunch and Recess
  • 7th - Social Studies
    • 1/2 the kids went to musical practice and the other half stayed and watched "Paul Revere's Ride and The Shot Heard Round the World" on Liberty Kids.
Homework:
  • ELA Packet  - Day 1
  • Math
    • Estimating Angles
    • Circles and Angles

ELA STATE TEST NEXT WEEK!!!

ARE YOU READY!!!

Friday, March 22, 2019

Friday, March 22nd

This week has totally FLOWN by!  I can't believe how busy and productive we have been!  I know we are all ready for the weekend!

  • 1st - 3rd - Math Block
    • We had an extended Math Block today because we are playing "catch up" a bit and we had a few things to accomplish.
    • 1st, we had to do the Friday Math Quiz - Friz!  Pretty good results from most of the class and the scores will be on Teacherease in a bit.
    • Next we reviewed the homework and made sure everyone was good with what we had been learning about fractional parts of circles and degrees.
    • Then we did the FUN learning.  We moved on to lesson 11.3 which was getting out the protractors and learning how to measure an angle.  We went over lining up the vertex with the cross hairs of the protractor.  Making sure one ray of the angle is on the zero line of the protractor.  Using the other ray as our measure.  Always start counting on the zero.  Look at your angle.  IF it is less than 90, then your measure should be too.  If it is greater than 90, then your measure should be too.  We did lots of practice!  Then we moved into drawing our own angles.  WE start again with creating a vertex.  Drawing our first ray. Then we line up the cross hairs and zero angle line again... then we mark where the angle we need should be, and then we draw a ray from the vertex to that point.  Was a lot of work!  We worked through a lot of practice problems, classwork, handouts... I think we got it.  We will be doing this for a few more days so make sure if you don't get it.. to see me one on one so we can master it.
  • 4th-5th- ELA Block
    • Finishing our week looking at Poetry and Plays.. .today Mr. Nunez and Ms. Young worked through an iReady lesson on Plays.  The ELA State test is coming up very quickly - April 2nd and 3rd, so we are trying to cover as many things as possible literature wise because we just don't know what they will pick.. will it be nonfiction, will it be fiction, will it be poetry, will it be a play... the more we work with each different genre, the more at ease the kiddos will be.
  • 6th - Lunch
  • 7th - PE with Mr. Hoffman.
Homework:
  • Measure Angles with Protractors
    • One where they use the protractor to measure the angle.
    • One where they have to subtract the highest angle from the lowest angle to get the angle
    • if you have a protractor at home, practice using it
  • Reading
    • Read and respond in RRJ
  • Writing
    • A few people still have not completed literature essays!!

Tuesday in Class 301

This week is going to be a lot of assessment due to the fact that we are finishing units in Reading, Writing, and Math.  So lots of end of unit assessments and beginning of unit assessments are upon us.

  • 1st - Music with Ms. Young
  • 2nd / 3rd / 4th - Extended Math Block
    • We went to the library to return books and check out new books for our independent reading pleasure.  That took 20/30 minutes of period 2.
    • We had an extended Math Block today because we had to play catch up from Friday when we went on the field trip.  Students used the first period to turn in Math from Monday that wasn't turned in and to complete the FRIZ test from Friday (scores are on teacherease.com already).  Then we did lesson 10.7 in GoMath about patterns in geometry.   Then students had 15/20 minutes to try the end of the unit review questions.  We spent another 10-15 minutes going over questions students had from the review.
    • 4th and part of 5th students did their Chapter 10 Math Test and put the results into ThinkCentral for immediate feedback.  You can have your child sign into ThinkCentral at home and view their tests online.  The scores are on teacherease.
  • 5th/7th - Reading/Writing
    • The end of our reading unit means ASSESSMENT time!  We read a great text together called "Slower Than the Rest" by Cynthia Rylant.  We read it together closely stopping to ask and answer questions as we read.  We then read all four short response questions that students had to answer together to make sure they understood what they were being asked.  Students used the rest of period 5 and 7 to answer the four short response questions using the R.A.C.E. format.
  • 6th - Lunch
Homework:
  • Math - TWO Exemplar tasks
    • All About Shapes
    • An Angle Challenge
  • ELA - Packet
    • Day 1 and 2 should be complete after today
      • Students need to take special care of each day's assignment because these scores count!
